ODESSA: “THE PEARL OF THE BLACK SEA”
The city of Odessa in the south-east of Ukraine is a stone’s throw from Chisinau, just 160 km away. Why not take a look? Located at the side of the Black Sea, this city is marvelous of romanticism.
Odessa is incredibly charming and it is an understatement to say that a stroll through its streets is a poetic experience. This port city of more than a million inhabitants is famous throughout Eastern Europe for its exceptional architecture, its fine sandy beaches, its nights of celebration and its history rich in twists and turns.
It was here that the famous battleship Potemkin called to revolution in 1905. It is also here that the vagaries of history made the Duke of Richelieu become governor of my town in 1803 and that he gave local architecture an unusual French touch on this Slavic land. The great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was not mistaken when he wrote that Odessa was a place where “you can feel Europe. French is spoken and there are European newspapers and magazines to read”.
In summer, Odessa is taken over by Ukrainian, Russian and Moldovan youth. The fiesta lasts all night on certain beaches where vodka flows afloat while the center is full of charming little restaurants, wine bars, majestic Orthodox churches and avenues suitable for romantic walks.
In winter, the city does not die. Anyone who takes the time to watch the boats leave the port of Odessa to reach the Georgian coast (feeling the cold of the sea wind on their cheeks) will immediately feel like traveling in a Russian novel of the 19th century.
