EventsThe Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic: A Country That Doesn’t Exist - Voyages Moldavie

28 March 2025by admin
The American traveler and popular blogger Drew Binsky, known for visiting all 197 countries in the world, shared his perspective on his journey through Eastern Europe.

He traveled to Transnistria – a country that officially does not exist – accompanied by his loved ones. This experience led them to question: how do the people of this territory truly live, and what factors genuinely define the existence of a country?

In his video titled “I Went to a Country That Doesn’t Exist”, Drew Binsky portrays Transnistria as a true time capsule: towering statues of Lenin, symbols of the Soviet era, and even a unique local currency can be found there. The journey includes a tasting of Soviet culinary specialties and a surprising kvas – a traditional non-alcoholic beverage known for its numerous health benefits.

Why is the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic sometimes called “the Republic of Sheriff”?

In his vlog, Drew Binsky mentioned the influence of the “Sheriff” company on the region’s economy. “Sheriff” is the largest private company in Transnistria and plays a key role in its economy and politics. Founded in 1993, it controls many sectors, including retail, oil, telecommunications, finance, industry, and sports. The company owns a chain of supermarkets, gas stations, the mobile phone operator Interdnestrcom, and the famous football club “Sheriff” Tiraspol, which has helped bring international attention to the region. Due to its influence, “Sheriff” has become a true economic monopoly in Transnistria, exerting considerable influence on domestic politics and the daily life of the population.

The inhabitants of Transnistria are known for their open-mindedness and kindness.

During a trip to the region, a traveler visited the banks of the Dniester River, where a local fisherman not only shared the intricacies of his profession but also gave a demonstration of fishing techniques. Later, a resident invited him to his home to show his collection of photographic equipment and share fascinating stories.

The trip ended with a meeting with a Transnistrian woman, Babushka, a kind and intelligent lady. The guests surprised her while she was working: she was picking grapes and making traditional wine. During their conversation, she shared her view of happiness: “For me, happiness is my grandchildren, their races, and their laughter,” she said warmly. The travelers, deeply moved by her words and charmed by her hospitality, couldn’t help but remark on the generosity of her garden, which they described as “abundant in crops.” Before their departure, Babushka gifted her guests ripe grapes and fresh walnuts, leaving them with a warm memory of her home and the traditions of Transnistria.

This trip to Transnistria was a true revelation for Drew’s family. Everything they saw, felt, and experienced will remain forever etched in their memory. From the hospitality of the locals to the unique traditions, every moment was unforgettable: the beauty of the landscapes, the warmth of the people, and their incredible kindness. An authentic place that deserves to be discovered, and where they will undoubtedly return.
