Sojourn “Jewish Memory”
Jews have lived in the area since the end of the 14th century.
Moldova, historically called Bessarabia, is known to have been the homeland of many Jews in history. A journey under the sign of memory. You will appreciate the dense program but also the beautiful hotels that we have selected for you.
This trip will lead you to discover the capital Chisinau, the village of Vadul Rascov and Orhei, places of importance in the country’s Jewish history. The largest Jewish cemetery in Europe and one of the oldest is in Chisinau. Finally, upscale restaurants will open their doors for you to discover and taste Moldovan cuisine.

Les Juifs de Moldavie : vie et destin
À la fin du XIXe siècle , la Moldavie comptait plus de 230 000 Juifs, soit environ un tiers de la population totale. Dans la capitale, Chișinău, ils représentaient même 50 % des habitants.
Le pays était un important centre culturel pour la littérature yiddish et hébraïque. Plusieurs synagogues furent construites aussi bien dans les villages que dans les villes. Par exemple, la capitale, Chișinău, comptait 70 synagogues et seize écoles juives.
En juin 1941, lors de l'invasion de l'URSS par l'Allemagne nazie, la Roumanie fasciste du maréchal Ion Antonescu (surnommé le « Pétain roumain ») entra en guerre et s'empara du territoire de l'actuelle Moldavie avec l'aide d'Hitler. Cette occupation entraîna une politique antisémite féroce et l'extermination d'une grande partie de la population juive locale. On estime qu'il en reste moins d'un cinquième.
Le cimetière juif d'Orhei : témoin du passé
La ville d'Orhei est située dans le centre-est du pays, à 50 kilomètres de la capitale Chisinau.
Les premières inhumations ont probablement eu lieu à la fin du XVIIe siècle , ce qui en fait l'un des plus anciens cimetières juifs de la région.
On dénombre plus de 4 000 pierres tombales sur une superficie d'environ 400 000 mètres carrés. Les lieux sont presque à l'abandon et la végétation y est abondante.
À la fin du XIXe siècle , 80 % de la population de la ville était de confession juive (environ 32 000 personnes). Aujourd’hui, il ne reste qu’une centaine d’Israélites.
Ce cimetière témoigne de l'importance de cette communauté et de sa quasi-disparition en l'espace de 80 ans.
