Your adventure begins as you cross the border into Transnistria and arrive by Rybnitsa, in  Stroentsy, a tranquil village surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards. Your journey continues to Kamenca, a charming town known for its scenic river views, 18th to 19th-century architecture, and open-air sculptures from the Soviet period. Once an important trading post, Camenca preserves traces of noble estates and an authentic small-town charm that seems frozen in time.

Finally, your tour returns to Rybnitsa.
The Rybnitsa District was first established on October 12, 1924, as part of the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The earliest historical references to Rîbnița date back to the early 17th century. In 1793, the territory was annexed by the Russian Empire following the Second Partition of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century transformed  Rybnitsa into an important transport hub, connecting road, river, and rail networks. During the Soviet era, industrial development grew rapidly as new enterprises fueled the local economy. Today, Rybnitsa stands as the largest industrial center in Transnistria and hosts key facilities such as the Moldavian Metallurgical Plant and the Rybnitsa Cement Plant, both major contributors to the region’s economy.

As a major administrative center,  Rybnitsa is often regarded as the northern capital of Transnistria. The town preserves the authentic atmosphere of the Soviet period, reflected in its monumental architecture, wide avenues, and the imposing statue of Lenin that dominates the central square.Rybnitsa feels like a living museum of the past, offering visitors a unique insight into Moldova’s industrial and political history so a land where time seems to stand still and every corner tells its own story.

More about this tour

Camenca District is renowned for its rich history. Its territory is home to many historical sites that have been preserved to this day. Let's explore their timelines.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Camenca Cannery. It specializes in the production of canned meat, fruits, and vegetables, as well as juices and compotes.

At the beginning of the 19th century (just over 200 years ago), the residence of Princess Trubetskaya, daughter of Piotr Wittgenstein, was constructed. The building was erected in the architectural Classicism style, which dominated the construction of Russian estates at the time.

The development of the "P. H. Wittgenstein" Culture and Leisure Park began just over 200 years ago. It was intended for guests resting and undergoing grape-juice treatment there. The park was planted with valuable tree species brought from abroad, and ponds were dug where fish were raised. Numerous flower beds were also cultivated, one of which represented the coat of arms of the Wittgenstein family.

Just over 150 years ago, the "Nistru" Sanatorium gained fame as the first grape-treatment resort in the Southeast of the Russian Empire. Today, the sanatorium continues its legacy as one of the most modern curative institutions in Transnistria.

The Saint Cajetan Catholic Church was built 238 years ago. The building is a classic example of Polish Catholic church architecture from the 18th century, featuring elements of Baroque.

The Synagogue was constructed 275 years ago. It long served as the spiritual center for the Jewish community in Rașcov. Only the stone walls remain preserved to this day.

Almost 450 years ago (at the beginning of the 17th century), the "Lady's Spring" appeared. According to legend, Ruxanda, the daughter of the Moldavian ruler, married Timofei, the son of the famous Ukrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. He died a year later. Ruxanda was granted ownership of Rașcov, where she lived for 13 years. This spring is said to have originated from her tears.

184 years ago, the Wittgenstein Family Vault was built in the basement of the Lutheran church. The walls of the crypt contain niches for the interment of the deceased, and it is decorated with columns and a vaulted ceiling.

The Intercession of the Mother of God Church was built 294 years ago. It was initially Greek-Catholic before becoming Orthodox. Only its ruins have survived to the present day. Like many other religious buildings, it was destroyed during the Soviet period.

Nearly 100 years ago, a pillbox was constructed to defend the Nistru (Dniester) bank. It is now the "Stalin Line" historical and cultural complex. Pillbox 24A was one of the most powerful in the Rîbnița fortified district, featuring a large, long underground space with many different rooms. The combat compartment consisted of two casemates: a triple-machine-gun caponier and an artillery semi-caponier with two cannons. The underground section of the pillbox was like a large subterranean city.

One of the attractions in Camenca District is Piatra Roșie (Red Stone). It was named so due to the red hue of the limestone that appears at sunset.
