Between April 19 and 28, 2025, Moldova will observe Easter Holidays – a vibrant celebration of age-old customs and the blossoming of spring.

On this occasion, Moldova reveals all its splendor: apricot and plum orchards are adorned with delicate white and pink blossoms, the air is filled with the gentle scents of spring, and every region fervently prepares for the most important Orthodox holiday – Easter. In 2025, both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches will celebrate Easter on April 20, offering a perfect opportunity to experience Moldova’s festive atmosphere.
Moldovan Easter traditions are rich in unique rituals, deep symbolism, and genuine warmth, reflecting both Christian and pre-Christian roots.
On the Easter table in Moldova, one traditionally finds kouglofs (called pască) with icing symbolizing spiritual renewal, red Easter eggs representing life and the blood of Christ, Moldovan cheese served with various dishes, and roast lamb, symbolizing the Lamb of God.

Pysanka in Moldova is an ancient art of sacred egg decoration, called “încondeierea ouălor,” where each line and color carries a deep meaning. Egg painting is a tradition widespread in many Eastern and Central European countries. Today, several colors are used to adorn the eggs, each carrying a specific symbol:
- White – purity,
- Red – life (the color of blood),
- Blue – sky and water,
- Black – fertility,
- Yellow – sun and gold.
The linear patterns on the eggs symbolize eternity. Plant-based dyes, derived from ancestral recipes, are extracted from local plants: red from apple skin or rose hip bark, blue from primroses, yellow from onion skins or dogwood, green from walnut or sunflower leaves, and black from fermented walnut bark.

In the villages and craft centers of Moldova, one can see artisans hand-painting eggs using wax, natural dyes, and extremely fine brushes. The patterns that adorn these shells are not merely decorative: they carry ancient symbols of the sun, fertility, protection, and the renewal of life. More than just decoration, it is a living culture.

For travelers who wish not only to observe but also to participate in the creation of these Easter wonders, workshops and festivals are organized throughout Moldova. During these workshops, you will learn to:
- Work with wax and wax sticks;
- Use natural dyes (onion skins, beetroot, blueberries);
- Decorate eggs with patterns inspired by Moldovan folk art.
These workshops take place in a warm atmosphere, accompanied by explanations about Moldovan traditions and, of course, a tasting of local specialties: Easter bread (“pască”), wine, and traditional sweets.
