The city of Soroca is home to Moldova’s iconic fortress!
The enchanting landscapes of northern Moldova conceal many historical secrets. Among them is Soroca Fortress, one of the country’s most emblematic medieval monuments. Perched on the picturesque banks of the Dniester River, it draws thousands of visitors each year, captivated by its history and distinctive architecture.
Built in 1499 by order of Stephen the Great (1457–1504), the original fortress was made of wood and earth, constructed on the foundations of an ancient Genoese settlement called Alcyone. In the 15th century, Soroca was part of a vast defensive network linking Khotin, Bender, Orhei, and other southern forts of the country.
Between 1543 and 1546, during the reign of Petru Rareș, the fortress was completely rebuilt in stone. Inspired by European designs, the prince brought in skilled craftsmen from Transylvania. Soroca’s circular layout recalls Italian and English fortresses, such as Castel del Monte in Italy or Restormel Castle in Cornwall. Originally designed to house soldiers, it also served as a refuge for the local population during times of war.
After a full restoration completed in 2015, the fortress reopened to the public in April 2025. Since then, it has welcomed over 20,000 visitors from around the world. Italian and Spanish tourists in particular have praised the guided tours in English, highlighting the beauty of Moldova’s landscapes and the site’s unique historical atmosphere.
