Welcome to Chișinău, a city full of charm where history lives through every street. Here, every street and every building tells a part of the past. Among the architectural gems of the capital, the Water Tower located at the intersection of Alexei Mateevici and Mitropolit Bănulescu-Bodoni streets stands out for its historical significance. The famous Chișinău Water Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks to explore.
A Glimpse into History
Built in 1892, the Water Tower marks a key milestone in the development of Chișinău. It was designed by Alexandru Bernardazzi, one of the most renowned architects in Moldova. This eclectic-style structure captivates visitors with its unique charm and appearance.
At the time, the tower was part of the city’s first centralized water distribution system. Initiated by Mayor Karl Schmidt, two similar towers were constructed. However, only one has survived. The second was demolished in the 1960s. Today, the remaining tower proudly stands at the intersection of Vasile Alecsandri and Veronica Micle streets.

Architectural Features and Modern Use
Thanks to its sturdy construction, the tower has withstood several earthquakes. In the 1980s, an observation platform was added to its top. Since then, it has attracted both tourists and locals eager to enjoy the panoramic views of Chișinău and ” Valea Morilor ” Lake.
Inside, the historic atmosphere is well preserved. A spiral staircase leads to the upper floors, while a modern elevator ensures easy access. The building has five levels: four of them house the Chișinău History Museum, and the top floor offers a magnificent view of the city.
The “City History” Museum
The permanent exhibition takes you on a journey through time, from the 15th century to the present day. You will discover a rich collection of authentic objects: ancient documents, photographs, pottery, everyday tools, and archaeological finds.
For example, a ceramic pot dating back to the 3rd century AD, found within the city limits, draws particular attention. Traditional clothing and headwear further enrich this cultural immersion. Each displayed item tells a unique and fascinating story.

Evening Lighting
As evening falls, the tower becomes even more impressive. Multicolored spotlights, installed about ten years ago, illuminate it beautifully. This lighting transforms the tower into a true nighttime symbol of the city.
