Escapade en MoldavieWooden churches in Moldova to discover - Voyages Moldavie

4 June 2025by admin

The Republic of Moldova has a rich historical heritage, clearly reflected in its architecture, notably through its unique wooden churches. These sanctuaries, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, represent important examples of traditional construction styles. Wood, an accessible building material, made it possible to create structures that were both practical and masterfully crafted, adorned with intricate carvings and steep roofs typical of the region.

A key aspect lies in the influence of Romanian styles, closely linked to Moldova’s past. Many decorative elements and architectural features of Moldovan wooden churches share the same roots as those of Romanian religious buildings, thus highlighting the cultural unity of the region.

Only a few wooden churches remain in Moldova—and each deserves special attention. Below is a brief overview of these rare monuments.

Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Virgin — Chișinău

A well-preserved wooden church bearing the features of classic medieval Moldavian architecture. It is the oldest and tallest wooden sanctuary in the country, built in 1642 by the monks of the Gârzavca Monastery using solid oak from the forests of Călărași. In 1821, the church was dismantled and moved to the village of Hîrjauca in the Telenești district, where it served the local community for over a century. Later, in order to preserve it, the church was transferred to Chișinău, where it became part of the capital’s cultural heritage and a living witness to the multi-century spiritual history of the Republic of Moldova.

Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Virgin (village of Palanca, Călărași)

This sanctuary is a unique monument of 18th-century national architecture, although the first written records about it date only from 1847. Built on stone foundations and topped with wooden shingles, this sacred church harmoniously combines local traditions with the influence of Eastern European architecture. It was here, in Moldova, that a wooden church with domes appeared for the first time—a remarkably rare example of popular religious art.

For centuries, this site was not only a spiritual center but also a living symbol of regional culture, embodying the craftsmanship and Orthodox faith of generations. After a period of decline in the 20th century, the church was restored and reconsecrated, thereby preserving its authenticity and continuing its essential role in the life of the community.

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Căușeni

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates back to the 16th–17th centuries. Partially built underground, this sanctuary impresses not only with its unique architectural design but also with the dramatic historical context that surrounds it. According to tradition, the Christian building was deliberately constructed below ground level so as not to exceed the height of the neighboring Muslim mosque. Its stone walls, austere Byzantine forms, fragments of ancient frescoes, and a stone-carved iconostasis make it a unique monument — not only within Moldova, but across all of Eastern Europe.

The first mention of the church appears in a document issued by Voivode Petru Aron in 1455, attesting to its deep historical significance. Over the centuries, the sanctuary has undergone several modifications while preserving its authenticity. Special value is attributed to the frescoes from 1763, painted by the masters Radu, Voicu, and Stanciu, vividly depicting biblical scenes and intricate ornamentation. Today, the church remains an active place of worship, a site of pilgrimage, and a major cultural tourism destination, highlighting the richness and depth of Moldova’s religious architecture.
